  1. 1.

Hi, everyone. I'm Sayaka, the host of the NihongoDekita Podcast.

  2. 2.

This podcast is built around the concept of “Live Japanese,”

  3. 3.

bringing you everyday life in Japan and authentic conversations.

  4. 4.

In this episode, I'd like to talk about how grateful I am to all of you.

  5. 5.

Actually, I released the first podcast episode—was it two days ago, I think?

  6. 6.

Yes. Two days ago, I released the podcast everywhere at once—Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, YouTube, and Instagram.

  7. 7.

And then, so many people started following me,

  8. 8.

and you also left so many comments.

  9. 9.

    Thank you so much.

  10. 10.

I wanted to tell you how truly grateful I am,

  11. 11.

so I thought I'd make an episode about it.

  12. 12.

I was truly, deeply moved and so happy.

  13. 13.

To be honest, I was pretty nervous when I started this podcast.

  14. 14.

I'd been away from social media for about four months,

  15. 15.

and I was starting on a completely new channel.

  16. 16.

I kept wondering, “Will this be okay? Will it be okay?” I was really anxious.

  17. 17.

The reason I still wondered whether things would be okay with everyone was

  18. 18.

precisely because I hadn't been able to post anything for four whole months.

  19. 19.

Even though I hadn't been putting out videos for you,

  20. 20.

so many people still remembered me and NihongoDekita,

  21. 21.

and so many of you left comments.

  22. 22.

    It made me so happy,

  23. 23.

and I thought, “Nothing could make me happier than this,”

  24. 24.

so I wanted to record this episode.

  25. 25.

    Thank you, everyone.

  26. 26.

And some of the comments said things like

  27. 27.

    “Oh, it's my favorite teacher!”

  28. 28.

or, “I've been studying with Sayaka's NihongoDekita videos for years,”

  29. 29.

and, “I'm happy that my favorite teacher has started a podcast.”

  30. 30.

Even though I really hadn't been able to keep posting videos consistently,

  31. 31.

all I can feel when you say things like that is gratitude.

  32. 32.

    Just pure gratitude.

  33. 33.

I'm so thankful that I don't even know how to put my gratitude into words.

  34. 34.

    I'm truly, truly happy.

  35. 35.

And there was one more thing I was worried about:

  36. 36.

    on my other existing channels,

  37. 37.

I mean, in my other videos and on my channels that aren't podcasts,

  38. 38.

I often explained things in English.

  39. 39.

In fact, I do most of my explaining in English.

  40. 40.

Right. A lot of my videos were aimed at beginners,

  41. 41.

and since I can speak English, I wanted to make use of that ability.

  42. 42.

There are already so many wonderful teachers who can teach Japanese in Japanese,

  43. 43.

so I also wondered whether there was any need for me to do it.

  44. 44.

I wondered, “Why do I need to do this now?”

  45. 45.

and why I should start now, when there are already so many great podcast channels out there.

  46. 46.

It felt a bit like diving into a red ocean—a highly competitive market.

  47. 47.

I wondered what distinct value I could possibly offer by doing that,

  48. 48.

    so I was really anxious.

  49. 49.

For one thing, I thought I’d just go ahead and get started,

  50. 50.

and I started because I wanted to connect with people.

  51. 51.

So there were quite a few things I was worried about.

  52. 52.

I had all sorts of concerns, but

  53. 53.

I decided to make the podcast entirely in Japanese,

  54. 54.

In fact, I don’t even add English subtitles on YouTube.

  55. 55.

Right. And yet, I received lots of comments in Japanese.

  56. 56.

I was so happy. I was genuinely thrilled.

  57. 57.

    You know, with only Japanese.

  58. 58.

After all, speaking in my native language is the easiest for me,

  59. 59.

and it lets me express the widest range of things, right?

  60. 60.

English is good in its own way, but I’m not a native speaker, after all,

  61. 61.

Yeah. Japanese is easier for me to speak.

  62. 62.

Even though I only speak in Japanese like that,

  63. 63.

all of you who are studying Japanese—

  64. 64.

I don’t know what each of your native languages is, but

  65. 65.

Where are you all listening from?

  66. 66.

    I’d love to know.

  67. 67.

I really want to know that. Please tell me!

  68. 68.

I don’t know what your native languages are, but

  69. 69.

so many people left comments in Japanese,

  70. 70.

and wrote “thank you” in Japanese,

  71. 71.

And not only that—they shared their experiences and their thoughts,

  72. 72.

    It was just...

  73. 73.

Right from the first episode, I felt that connection with people that I wanted to create through this podcast,

  74. 74.

and the goal of connecting learners—people studying Japanese—

  75. 75.

was already happening from episode one,

  76. 76.

and that made me incredibly happy.

  77. 77.

    I was truly happy.

  78. 78.

Today, this whole episode is just me saying, “I was so happy.”

  79. 79.

I might not say anything other than “I was happy” and “thank you.”

  80. 80.

    Sorry about that.

  81. 81.

But, well, I wanted to tell you all how I felt.

  82. 82.

And since I hadn’t shared my story or my thoughts before,

  83. 83.

sharing those things felt a little...

  84. 84.

I was thinking, “Oh, this is scary. What will people think of me? What kind of reactions will I get?”

  85. 85.

But, you know, everyone who listens is so kind.

  86. 86.

You really did share your own experiences with me,

  87. 87.

and learning about them was both enjoyable and heartwarming.

  88. 88.

I’ll say it again: thank you so much.

  89. 89.

Right. Now, if it were only my stories and thoughts,

  90. 90.

I think that would create a connection only between me and all of you.

  91. 91.

    In the comments, for example,

  92. 92.

I think people studying Japanese and those listening to this episode can talk with each other there too.

  93. 93.

Hmm. I’d like to incorporate more of your experiences into this podcast,

  94. 94.

so I have a small favor to ask.

  95. 95.

Yes. After saying “thank you, thank you,” I’m turning around and asking you for a favor, but...

  96. 96.

    I’m sorry.

  97. 97.

The goal is to connect everyone who’s studying,

  98. 98.

and to turn this podcast into a community.

  99. 99.

And I want to be there for you and understand your feelings and concerns.

  100. 100.

When I say “be there for you,” I mean yorisou, staying close to someone.

  101. 101.

Yorisou means wanting to stay close to someone and think things through together.

  102. 102.

So I’d really like you all to email me your stories.

  103. 103.

As for what kind of stories I mean,

  104. 104.

for example, difficulties you’ve had in Japan,

  105. 105.

or things that make you think, “What’s with Japanese people? That’s weird.” It’s perfectly fine to think something is strange.

  106. 106.

It may simply be a cultural difference, after all.

  107. 107.

Or perhaps it isn’t a cultural difference at all,

  108. 108.

so we can think about that together too,

  109. 109.

so I’d like you to tell me about it.

  110. 110.

There are plenty of strange people all over the world, after all.

  111. 111.

“Is that part of the culture, or not?”

  112. 112.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell, isn’t it?

  113. 113.

I think it’s better to ask about things like that.

  114. 114.

You could also share things that surprised you in Japan,

  115. 115.

or what moved or impressed you when you first came to Japan,

  116. 116.

or, conversely, something that made you think, “Wow, I wish they had this in Japan.”

  117. 117.

And of course, when you’re studying Japanese,

  118. 118.

you’ll probably have occasions to communicate with Japanese people.

  119. 119.

Especially if you have a Japanese boyfriend or girlfriend, or are married to a Japanese person,

  120. 120.

or if you have Japanese friends,

  121. 121.

and especially when it comes to romantic relationships.

  122. 122.

There are probably questions like, “I have a Japanese girlfriend, but why won’t she tell me how she feels?”

  123. 123.

I’m sure that happens. Japanese people tend not to express their feelings.

  124. 124.

    I didn’t express mine either.

  125. 125.

    I would bottle everything up,

  126. 126.

without saying anything about what was bothering me.

  127. 127.

    I just wouldn’t say anything.

  128. 128.

It’s because we think, “Notice it without me having to say anything.”

  129. 129.

We keep quiet and bottle it all up until we can’t take it anymore, and then we explode.

  130. 130.

You could ask what to do in situations like that,

  131. 131.

because I’ve experienced it myself from the Japanese side.

  132. 132.

So I’ll think it through together with all of you.

  133. 133.

    And also, Japanese people...

  134. 134.

For example, people who are married to someone Japanese.

  135. 135.

You might wonder what to do when meeting your Japanese wife’s or husband’s family.

  136. 136.

I’m sure there are all sorts of things,

  137. 137.

so please send me all kinds of stories,

  138. 138.

    stories related to Japan,

  139. 139.

and difficulties you’ve had while studying Japanese.

  140. 140.

I’m sure you have plenty to share, so please email me.

  141. 141.

    As for the email address,

  142. 142.

    the email address is nihongodekitapodcast@gmail.com,

  143. 143.

so please send your messages there.

  144. 144.

And I won’t say who sent the email.

  145. 145.

    I'll protect everyone's privacy, so...

  146. 146.

Um, please send me some kind of nickname.

  147. 147.

    Anything is fine.

  148. 148.

Something like “Nagoya123” would be fine too.

  149. 149.

Right. If you're a cameraman or someone who likes cameras, you could use something like “cameraman from Japan.”

  150. 150.

Anything is fine, so please send me a nickname.

  151. 151.

Then, in an episode of my podcast, I can say...

  152. 152.

“Oh, today we received a message from Cameraman from Japan. Thank you!”—something like that.

  153. 153.

I'd like to do something a bit like a radio show.

  154. 154.

I want to do something like a radio show and build a community with all of you, so...

  155. 155.

    So please do take part!

  156. 156.

Right. One reason I want to do that is to build a community, but...

  157. 157.

There may be someone listening who has been through the same experience.

  158. 158.

Also, after listening to the podcast, in the comments...

  159. 159.

I think there will be lots of comments, so...

  160. 160.

    Please leave a comment.

  161. 161.

Yes. I think comments will come in, and if everyone can connect there...

  162. 162.

I would be truly, truly, truly, truly happy!

  163. 163.

All right, I think I'll wrap things up here for today.

  164. 164.

Everyone, thank you for listening again today.

  165. 165.

And honestly, everyone, thank you for listening to the podcast today and every time, and for being here...

  166. 166.

    Thank you so much.

  167. 167.

I'll keep doing my best from here on out, so...

  168. 168.

I hope you'll continue to support me!

  169. 169.

Well then, see you in the next episode.
