    みなさん、こんにちは

    Hello, everyone.

  2. 2.

    ここは明治神宮です

    This is Meiji Shrine.

  3. 3.

    お正月に神社やお寺に行くことを「初詣」と言います

Visiting a shrine or temple at New Year is called “hatsumode.”

  4. 4.

    「はつ」は「初めて」という漢字で、 「もうで」の部分は、「神社やお寺に行く」という意味です

The “hatsu” is the kanji meaning “first,” while the “mode” part means “to visit a shrine or temple.”

  5. 5.

    明治神宮は、その「初詣」に来る人が日本でいちばん多い神社です

Meiji Shrine attracts more hatsumode visitors than any other shrine in Japan.

  6. 6.

    明治神宮には入り口が3つあります

    Meiji Shrine has three entrances.

  7. 7.

    私が入ってきたところは、いちばん小さい入り口なので

The entrance I came through is the smallest one, so...

  8. 8.

    あまり人がいないですね

    There aren’t many people here.

  9. 9.

    その上を飛行機が飛んでいきます

    An airplane flies overhead.

  13. 13.

    This path is dark, so...

  14. 14.

    明るいところを歩きましょう

    Let’s walk somewhere brighter.

  15. 15.

    結構あったかくて、外にいるのが気持ちいい日でした

It was quite warm and pleasant to be outside.

  18. 18.

    ところでみなさん

    By the way, everyone...

  19. 19.

    私が「あったかくて」と言ったのは聞こえましたか?

Did you hear me say “attakakute”?

  20. 20.

    「あったかくて」は「あったかい」なんですが、元々は「あたたかい」です

“Attakakute” comes from “attakai,” but the original word is “atatakai.”

  21. 21.

    よく発音するのが難しいと言われる言葉です

It’s a word that people often say is difficult to pronounce.

  22. 22.

    発音するのがたぶん、日本人にとっても難しいので

It’s probably difficult even for Japanese people to pronounce, so...

When speaking, we usually say “attakai.”

  24. 24.

    また飛行機が飛んでいきます

    Another airplane is flying by.

  25. 25.

    どこの会社の飛行機ですかね?

I wonder which airline that plane belongs to.

  26. 26.

    ちょっと見えないですね

I can’t quite make it out.

  27. 27.

    あの座っている人は、動画を配信しているんでしょうか

I wonder if that person sitting there is livestreaming a video.

  28. 28.

    すてきな背景で撮れそうですね

It looks like they can film with a lovely backdrop.

  29. 29.

    その手前に「立入禁止」と書いてある場所がありました

In front of it, there was an area marked “No Entry.”

  30. 30.

    この漢字、覚えておいてください

    Please remember these kanji.

  31. 31.

    「立入禁止」です

    It says “No Entry.”

  32. 32.

    「入ってはいけません」ということです

It means “You must not enter.”

  33. 33.

    入ると危なそうですね

It looks like it would be dangerous to go in.

  34. 34.

    あそこに立っている男の人が見ているのは、

What the man standing over there is looking at is...

  35. 35.

    もちろん飛行機です

    An airplane, of course.

  36. 36.

    同時にもう1機、別の方向に飛行機が飛んでいっています

At the same time, another plane is flying in a different direction.

  37. 37.

    飛行機だらけです

    There are airplanes everywhere.

  38. 38.

    日当たりのいいところに、人が多いですね

There are lots of people in the sunny spots.

  39. 39.

    There are ducks.

  41. 41.

    鴨が寝ています

    The ducks are sleeping.

  42. 42.

    その上を飛行機が飛び

    An airplane flies overhead, and...

  43. 43.

    芝生の上の人間たちは瞑想をしたり、何かを読んだり、寝っ転がったり

The people on the grass are meditating, reading something, lying down...

  44. 44.

    みんな好きなことをしているように見えました

Everyone seemed to be doing whatever they liked.

  45. 45.

    夕日が、まぶしいですね

    The setting sun is dazzling.

  46. 46.

    夕日というのは、夕方の太陽の光のことです

“Yuhi” refers to the light of the evening sun.

  47. 47.

    夕日は、夏は、赤いことがおおいです

In summer, the setting sun is often red.

  48. 48.

    夕やけ、ともいいます

    It is also called “yuyake.”

  49. 49.

    でも冬はこの日のような、黄色というか、 黄金のような色の夕日が見られます

But in winter, you can see sunsets like this one—yellow, or rather, golden in color.

  50. 50.

    きれいですね

    It's beautiful, isn't it?

  51. 51.

    その上をまた飛行機が飛んでいきました

Another plane flew across the sky above it.

  52. 52.

    飛行機好きな人には、最高の場所だと思います

I think this is the perfect place for people who love airplanes.

  53. 53.

    ずーっと飛行機が飛んでいました

Planes kept flying overhead the whole time.

  54. 54.

    代々木方面と原宿方面

    Toward Yoyogi and toward Harajuku.

  55. 55.

    代々木方面というのは、その方向に代々木がある、 ということです

“Toward Yoyogi” means that Yoyogi lies in that direction.

  56. 56.

    とりあえず代々木方面に行ってみます

For now, I'll try heading toward Yoyogi.

  57. 57.

    ここの木、自然の木のように見えるかもしれませんが

The trees here may look as though they grew naturally, but...

  58. 58.

    人工的に植えた木だそうです

Apparently, they were planted by people.

  59. 59.

    10万本の木が植えられたそうです

    Apparently, 100,000 trees were planted.

  60. 60.

    その時に50年後、100年後

At the time, they considered what it would be like 50 years and 100 years later...

  61. 61.

    そして150年後にどうなっているかを考えて、植えたそうです

And even what it would be like 150 years later, and apparently planted the trees with that in mind.

  62. 62.

    今この森は、できてから100年経っています

This forest has now been here for 100 years.

  63. 63.

    今は自然の森に見えますよね

Now it looks like a natural forest, doesn't it?

  64. 64.

    計画通りなんだと思います

I think it turned out just as planned.

  65. 65.

    すごいですね

    That's amazing.

  66. 66.

    人が多くなってきました

It's starting to get more crowded.

  67. 67.

    観光バスも来ています

    Tour buses are arriving too.

  68. 68.

    ここは代々木口という入り口です

This entrance is called the Yoyogi Entrance.

  69. 69.

    今年の1月1日には、ここから入って初詣に行きました

On January 1 this year, I entered here to make my first shrine visit of the year.

  70. 70.

    その時の動画はこちらです

Here's the video from that visit.

  71. 71.

    ものすごく混んでたんですが、おもしろかったですよ

It was incredibly crowded, but it was interesting.

  72. 72.

    私はさっきの広場に戻って、 入ってきた入り口から出ることにしました

I decided to return to the plaza from earlier and leave through the entrance I came in through.

  73. 73.

    明治神宮の入り口の門がもうすぐ閉まる、というアナウンスが流れていました

An announcement was playing that the entrance gates to Meiji Shrine would close soon.

  74. 74.

    あそこに石があるのはわかりますか?

Can you see the stone over there?

  75. 75.

    あれは「亀石」と呼ばれていて

That is called the “Turtle Stone,” and...

  76. 76.

    触ると長生きできる健康な体が手に入る、と言われているんだそうです

It's said that touching it will grant you a healthy body and a long life.

  77. 77.

    亀は長生きをする動物なので、 亀の形をした石は、縁起がいいんだと思います

Since turtles are long-lived animals, I think a turtle-shaped stone is considered auspicious.

  78. 78.

    「縁起がいい」というのは「なにかいいことが 起こりそう」というような意味です

“Engi ga ii” means something like “it seems that something good will happen.”

  79. 79.

    飛行機が通ると、どうしても上を見てしまいます

Whenever a plane passes overhead, I can't help looking up.

  80. 80.

    あそこにカラスがたくさんいます

There are lots of crows over there.

  81. 81.

    攻撃されたらどうしようと、ちょっとドキドキしました

My heart raced a little as I wondered what I'd do if they attacked me.

  82. 82.

    でもカラスのほうが、どいてくれました

But the crows moved out of the way for me.

  83. 83.

    ちょっと悪いことをした気がしました

I felt a little bad about it.

  84. 84.

    鳥がたくさん集まっているのを見ると

When I see a large group of birds gathered together...

  85. 85.

    ヒッチコックの『鳥』という映画を思い出します

It reminds me of Hitchcock's film The Birds.

  86. 86.

    みなさん見たことありますか?

Have any of you seen it?

  87. 87.

    1963年の映画なので、見たことがない人が多いと思います

Since it's a film from 1963, I think many people haven't seen it.

  88. 88.

    あれめっちゃ怖いですよ

    That movie is really scary.

  89. 89.

    鳥が理由もなく襲ってくるんです

Birds attack people for no reason.

  90. 90.

    あの映画を見た後では、鳥の集団が怖くなります

After watching that movie, groups of birds become frightening.

  91. 91.

    出口が見えてきました

The exit is coming into view.

  92. 92.

    入ってきたところから出て、次は代々木公園に行きます

I'll leave through the place where I entered, and then head to Yoyogi Park.

  93. 93.

    代々木公園は地図で見ると、明治神宮の隣です

On the map, Yoyogi Park is right next to Meiji Shrine.

  94. 94.

    でも繋がっていません

    But they aren't directly connected.

  95. 95.

    なので一度、明治神宮から外に出て

So I first have to leave Meiji Shrine...

  96. 96.

    代々木公園の入り口から入ります

And enter through the entrance to Yoyogi Park.

  97. 97.

    イチョウがとってもきれいでした

The ginkgo trees were very beautiful.

  98. 98.

    あの白い四角いようなものは、高速道路の出口です

That white, square-looking thing is an expressway exit.

  99. 99.

    東京を走る高速道路のことを「首都高」と言います

The expressways that run through Tokyo are called the Shuto Expressway.

  100. 100.

    「首都」というのは、その国の政治の中心になる場所です

A capital is the place that serves as the political center of a country.

  101. 101.

    日本で言うならば、東京

In Japan, that would be Tokyo.

  102. 102.

    アメリカは、ワシントンD.C.

For the United States, it's Washington, D.C.

  103. 103.

    韓国ならば、ソウルです

And for South Korea, it's Seoul.

  104. 104.

    ぎんなんが落ちています

Ginkgo nuts have fallen on the ground.

  105. 105.

    イチョウの木の実のことを「ぎんなん」と言います

The fruit of the ginkgo tree is called ginnan.

  106. 106.

    「ぎんなん」と「イチョウ」は同じ漢字を書きます

Ginnan and ichō are written with the same kanji.

  107. 107.

    そして、木のことは「銀杏(イチョウ)」

    The tree is called ichō,

  108. 108.

    実のことは「銀杏(ぎんなん)」と呼びます

while the fruit is called ginnan.

  109. 109.

    みなさんは、ぎんなんを食べたことがありますか?

Have you ever eaten ginkgo nuts?

  110. 110.

    きれいな黄緑色をしていて美味しいです

They have a lovely yellow-green color and taste delicious.

  111. 111.

    お寿司屋さんで、茶碗蒸しというものを頼むと

When you order a dish called chawanmushi at a sushi restaurant,

  112. 112.

    ぎんなんが入っていることが多いです

it often contains a ginkgo nut.

  113. 113.

    茶碗蒸しもとっても美味しいので、機会があったらぜひ食べてみてください

Chawanmushi is also delicious, so please try it if you get the chance.

  114. 114.

    イチョウの葉っぱが散っています

    The ginkgo leaves are falling.

  115. 115.

    きれいですね

    It's beautiful, isn't it?

  116. 116.

    左手側は代々木公園の有料の駐車場です

On the left is Yoyogi Park's paid parking lot.

  117. 117.

    「有料」というのは「お金がかかる」という意味です

Yūryō means that it costs money.

  118. 118.

    「空車」と書いてあります

The sign says kūsha, meaning spaces are available.

  119. 119.

    「空」という漢字には「空き」という読み方もあります

The kanji for sora can also be read aki.

  120. 120.

    この漢字があるときは、駐車場に空きがあるので入れます

When you see this kanji, it means the parking lot has spaces available, so you can enter.

  121. 121.

    駐車場のすぐ横に、代々木公園の入り口がありました

There was an entrance to Yoyogi Park right next to the parking lot.

  122. 122.

    「参宮橋門」と書いてあります

    It says “Sangūbashi Gate.”

  123. 123.

    では、問題です

    Now, here's a question.

  124. 124.

    ここには公園の利用時間、つまり使える時間が書いてあります

The park's hours of use—in other words, the hours when you can use it—are written here.

  125. 125.

    この日は11月27日でした

It was November 27 that day.

  126. 126.

    公園は何時まで利用できますか?

Until what time can the park be used?

  127. 127.

    午後5時までです

    Until 5:00 p.m.

  128. 128.

    ただ5時を過ぎても、この門は開いていました

However, this gate was still open even after five.

  129. 129.

    代々木公園もすごく居心地のいい場所です

Yoyogi Park is also a very pleasant place to spend time.

  130. 130.

    でも長くなるので、また次の機会にお見せします

But since this would make the video too long, I'll show it to you another time.

  131. 131.

    最後にコメントを1つ紹介します

Lastly, I'd like to share one comment.

    私は日本語は結構わかりますが、話すとなると

I understand Japanese fairly well, but when it comes to speaking it,

  134. 134.

    文のどこでポーズを入れたらいいかわかりません

I don't know where in a sentence I should pause.

  135. 135.

    それで、息が切れてしまいます!

So I end up running out of breath!

  136. 136.

    ジョンさん、ありがとうございます

    Thank you, John.

  137. 137.

    簡単なコツをお教えしますね。たいていは、助詞のあとに、ポーズを入れます

Let me teach you a simple trick. Usually, you pause after a particle.

  138. 138.

    例えば、「わたしは」や「とうきょうで」のあとにポーズを入れることができます

For example, you can pause after watashi wa or Tōkyō de.
