  1. 1.

Where do you think this is? In fact, it is only a short distance from Tokyo Disney Resort. Urayasu attracts many visitors today, but just a few decades ago, the town looked completely different. Fishermen sailed their boats on the sea, waterways crisscrossed the town, and people lived in close harmony with the ocean.

  2. 2.

And now, the Urayasu of those days has been fully recreated here.

  65. 65.

First, greeting me at the entrance was Assari-kun, the local museum's mascot. Having just eaten clam rice, it seems there's no escaping clams today.

Everywhere you look is picture-perfect. I wonder if this is what it was like before the land reclamation. Wow, this is incredible. So fishing was this active back then. They harvested lots of shellfish.

  67. 67.

Here you can learn how Urayasu developed into the city it is today. Urayasu was once a fishing town whose residents lived off the bounty of the sea. However,

the Kitty Typhoon of 1949 caused severe storm-surge damage, prompting the construction of levees to protect the town. Later, a land-reclamation plan was proposed to expand Urayasu by filling in parts of the sea.

  172. 172.

as if they're calling out to you, so you can't help but

  173. 173.

go inside. Ah, and as expected,

  174. 174.

every house smells wonderful when you enter.

you can tell they were particular about the wood they used.

  179. 179.

  187. 187.

    します。

    a grandmother's house.

  188. 188.

Things like this three-way mirror, too. Well, this isn't actually a three-way mirror,

  189. 189.

but the shape of this mirror

  190. 190.

looks exactly like the mirror at my grandmother's house.

  191. 191.

    It's identical.

  192. 192.

Wow, even the sewing-machine table is old...

  193. 193.

The Showa-era streetscape you can see from here is lovely too, isn't it?

  194. 194.

    。

    .

  195. 195.

You know, as you take each step like this...

  196. 196.

    Every time you step down...

  197. 197.

You can feel it shake. The building sways a little...

  198. 198.

    And that feeling is also...

  199. 199.

Nice. It really feels like a wooden building, and this steep...

  200. 200.

These stairs are really steep, aren't they?

  201. 201.

Once you're over sixty, you probably couldn't climb this...

  202. 202.

    That's what I mean.

  203. 203.

    It's cool in here.

  204. 204.

    It feels relaxing.

  205. 205.

I wonder. What about this? Maybe a mini truck...

  206. 206.

Could it get through? No, maybe that would be difficult. Between the buildings...

  207. 207.

It also feels nice walking through the spaces between the buildings like this.

  208. 208.

    。

    .

  209. 209.

    Just now...

  210. 210.

    たから

    Because...

  211. 211.

    ね

    You know.

  212. 212.

    Ah...

  213. 213.

Today is a weekday, so there's hardly anyone here, but after school, children would come here and—although they weren't really supposed to—play hide-and-seek or tag.

  214. 214.

But back then, there weren't many things to play with...

  215. 215.

So things like hide-and-seek and tag...

  216. 216.

I think everyone used to play them as a matter of course...

  217. 217.

I think. Nowadays, there are game consoles and things like that...

  218. 218.

There are so many that I think children end up playing with those instead...

  219. 219.

    But in the past, physical...

  220. 220.

Games that got children moving were...

  221. 221.

I think those were the most enjoyable moments for children.

  222. 222.

In that sense, seeing them playing...

  223. 223.

    Is rather heartwarming...

  224. 224.

It feels heartwarming. Of course, within the grounds here...

  225. 225.

Things like running and chasing one another...

  226. 226.

Are prohibited, so everyone should make sure to walk.

  227. 227.

Let's make sure we do that.

  228. 228.

If you go outside and look from this bridge, you can see the earlier...

  229. 229.

You can look out over the fishermen's town.

  230. 230.

Over there is the corner from earlier, and below us is the tempura shop...

  231. 231.

Right? The tofu shop is at the very back. Somehow, I've already...

  232. 232.

    Started to remember everything.

  233. 233.

I think I've already memorized the names of the shops.

  234. 234.

It's easy to remember where everything is since it's a small town...

  235. 235.

    So it's easy to remember.

  236. 236.

This time, I visited the Urayasu City Folk Museum...

  237. 237.

I did. By actually walking through the old houses and streets...

  238. 238.

I was able to experience up close what life in Urayasu was like, so different from today.

  239. 239.

I was able to get a real sense of it. Trying traditional games...

  240. 240.

And getting aboard a boat made this a place you can enjoy through both seeing and doing.

  241. 241.

but being able to actually experience it

  242. 242.

is another part of its appeal. And best of all, despite offering so much fun,

  243. 243.

admission is amazingly free. As someone who can't resist the word “free,”

  244. 244.

this was a very welcome place indeed.

  245. 245.

The Urayasu City Folk Museum lets you enjoy Urayasu's history while traveling

  246. 246.

a little way back in time.

  247. 247.

It isn't very far from Disney Resort either,

  248. 248.
