Japanese script with English translation

  1. 1.

But that doesn't mean the house is messy,

  2. 2.

or that we eat only at restaurants or rely entirely on prepared foods.

  3. 3.

    That's not the case.

  4. 4.

Even while taking it easy, I think I manage to maintain a reasonably tidy home

  5. 5.

    and a healthy diet.

  6. 6.

When it comes to housework and childcare, there are ideas like, “As a mother, you're supposed to do at least this much,”

  7. 7.

rules that no one really knows who made,

  8. 8.

or unspoken expectations—and I think there are a tremendous number of them.

  9. 9.

But when I questioned each one of them,

  10. 10.

asking, “Do I really have to do this?”

  11. 11.

    one by one,

  12. 12.

I found that, surprisingly, giving them up caused no problems at all.

  13. 13.

This time, I'll show you the rules for housework and childcare that I follow

  22. 22.

so that our family of five can live more easily.

  23. 23.

These are my rules for managing housework and raising children.

  24. 24.

    So, let's jump right in!

  25. 25.

I cut a lot of corners when doing laundry.

  26. 26.

    As I've mentioned before,

  27. 27.

I basically put everything in the dryer,

  28. 28.

so I don't hang laundry out to dry.

  29. 29.

And as for one of the chores that comes afterward—

  30. 30.

    “folding the laundry neatly”—

  31. 31.

I've let go of that too.

  32. 32.

When putting away freshly washed clothes, underwear, pajamas, towels, and so on,

  33. 33.

I think it's generally considered normal to make everything fit into the closets and drawers

  34. 34.

in each family member's room by hanging or folding it neatly.

  35. 35.

But in our home, we simply use the boxes right next to the washing machine:

  36. 36.

we toss everything into its respective box, and we're done.

  37. 37.

I have to say, I think this is a pretty great idea, if I do say so myself.

  38. 38.

In the hallway connecting the washing machine and the bathroom,

  39. 39.

    1. I installed a simple shelving unit.

  40. 40.

    2. I assigned a box location to each person.

  41. 41.

    3. After washing, I just toss the laundry in here.

  42. 42.

    4. Since the boxes contain pajamas and underwear,

  43. 43.

when it's time to shower, you can just take the whole box into the bathroom!

  44. 44.

This setup effectively combines the flow of housework with our everyday movement through the home.

  45. 45.

I think it works really well.

  46. 46.

By the way, this is what the inside of each box looks like.

  47. 47.

Small items such as underwear and socks go into a little compartment box,

  48. 48.

while T-shirts, undershirts, and other clothes worn in the current season...

  49. 49.

I just roughly fold them and stuff them into whatever space is available.

  50. 50.

Of course, the boxes belonging to everyone else in my family

  51. 51.

are always a complete mess! (laughs)

  52. 52.

But no matter how neatly I used to fold and put everything away,

  53. 53.

it would always end up being messed up again,

  54. 54.

and that was stressful for me, so

  55. 55.

I let go of the idea that even the insides of boxes and drawers have to be kept tidy.

  56. 56.

Once they're closed like this, they don't bother me at all,

  57. 57.

and it's more efficient not to accumulate too many things than to keep arranging them neatly,

  58. 58.

our household rule is: “If things start overflowing from this box, reassess how much you have.”

  59. 59.

    That's the rule we've adopted.

  60. 60.

And of course, I've also increased the amount of hanging storage, which doesn't require folding, but

  61. 61.

given the layout of our home, it's impossible to store all the clothes for our family of five using only hanging storage, so

  62. 62.

for frequently used items like everyday pajamas, underwear, and T-shirts,

  63. 63.

we make do with simple storage boxes.

  64. 64.

It's not that I've stopped doing housework,

  65. 65.

but this is something I'm very intentional about,

  66. 66.

so let me share my approach with you.

  67. 67.

As a rule, I don't do housework when my family isn't home.

  68. 68.

    I call it “visible housework.”

  69. 69.

When my family leaves for school or work

  70. 70.

and I, the mother, am left alone, most people would normally think,

  71. 71.

“All right, I'll clean while I have the chance! Do the laundry! Get dinner ready!”

  72. 72.

I think that's where most people's minds would go, but

  73. 73.

    I don't do that.

  74. 74.

I use the time I spend alone at home for my own work

  75. 75.

and the things I want to do.

  76. 76.

This is because I used to work full-time as an office employee,

  77. 77.

so even now, I try to maintain the mindset I had back then.

  78. 78.

When you're at the office working, you can't do anything around the house.

  79. 79.

Now that I work from home as a freelancer,

  80. 80.

I could do as much housework as I wanted during the day if I chose to.

  81. 81.

But if I start doing that,

  82. 82.

the boundary between work and housework disappears,

  83. 83.

and I end up taking care of the house all day long.

  84. 84.

Work may have an endpoint, but housework never ends!

  85. 85.

So even now, I maintain the same mindset I had when I was an office employee:

  86. 86.

my time alone is for work and for myself.

  87. 87.

I try to fold the laundry and tidy the kitchen

  88. 88.

while my family is around whenever possible.

  89. 89.

    This has two benefits.

  90. 90.

    1. Housework isn't magic; it's labor.

  91. 91.

When you do housework without anyone seeing it, to your family

  92. 92.

it becomes something that is somehow already done,

  93. 93.

and they tend to take it for granted that everything gets done.

  94. 94.

    But in reality,

  95. 95.

someone is spending their time doing it, right? (said pointedly)

  96. 96.

That's why I deliberately do it in front of my family.

  97. 97.

Housework is labor that continues 365 days a year—or rather, endlessly for as long as we live.

  98. 98.

Rather than leaving one person to shoulder it all,

  99. 99.

I believe we need a system that gets everyone living together involved.

  100. 100.

“The house doesn’t just clean itself.”

  101. 101.

To help everyone understand that too, I recommend making housework visible.

  102. 102.

    2. Parkinson’s Law *Sorry, I pronounced it incorrectly.

  103. 103.

This mysterious, suspicious-sounding law has suddenly appeared, but

  104. 104.

to explain briefly what it means,

  105. 105.

the more resources people have, such as time or money,

  106. 106.

the more they will use them all up.

  107. 107.

It is a law describing this tendency in human psychology and behavior.

  108. 108.

In short, even if a household chore could be finished in ten minutes,

  109. 109.

if you have thirty minutes available, that chore will take thirty minutes.

  110. 110.

    That’s what it means.

  111. 111.

Have you ever rushed to clean everything in the last few minutes before guests arrived

  112. 112.

and finished incredibly quickly something that would normally take much longer?

  113. 113.

Haven’t you all had an experience like that? (I have.)

  114. 114.

You could also call this the “deadline effect,”

  115. 115.

but the point is that the less time you allow for housework, the more efficiently and quickly you can do it.

  116. 116.

Doing housework where others can see you has this welcome hidden benefit, so please give it a try.

  117. 117.

Shoes go here. Bags go here. Clothes you’ve taken off go here.

  118. 118.

And whoever used something puts it back.

  119. 119.

    That is our basic rule.

  120. 120.

Of course, since they’re children, they often leave things lying around.

  121. 121.

But in those moments, I don’t pick everything up and put it back for them...

  122. 122.

Basically, I make a point of not doing that.

  123. 123.

Of course, my youngest daughter is only six, so sometimes she can’t tidy up very well,

  124. 124.

or she makes an enormous mess,

  125. 125.

making it too daunting for her to clean up alone,

  126. 126.

so I do sometimes help her.

  127. 127.

In our home, we have rules: “If you leave it on the floor, the Roomba will eat it,”

  128. 128.

and “If it’s left there for too long, Mom will throw it away.”

  129. 129.

    Because we have those rules,

  130. 130.

the children rush to put their things away (laughs).

  131. 131.

It may sound a little harsh, but

  132. 132.

if they come to assume that Mom will clean up for them,

  133. 133.

I worry that they’ll never learn to manage their own belongings,

  134. 134.

so I’ve adopted these rules to motivate the children.

  135. 135.

Yes, as you may have guessed, this is where I rely on the wonders of modern technology:

  136. 136.

    a robot vacuum,

  137. 137.

to which I completely delegate the daily vacuuming.

  138. 138.

I didn’t have much faith in robot vacuums before,

  139. 139.

so I used to vacuum myself, but

  140. 140.

even if vacuuming takes only fifteen minutes a day,

  141. 141.

that adds up to 7.5 hours (450 minutes) a month,

  142. 142.

    and 91.25 hours (5,475 minutes) a year.

  143. 143.

Those little bits really add up and consume a considerable amount of time, don’t they?

  144. 144.

Today’s robot vacuums really are amazingly capable,

  145. 145.

It easily gets over bumps and thresholds, too,

  146. 146.

and it avoids obstacles as well.

  147. 147.

    Though the other day,

  148. 148.

our Roomba got tangled up in some toilet paper...

  149. 149.

When it comes to the three must-have convenience appliances,

  150. 150.

    a robot vacuum,

  151. 151.

    a dishwasher-dryer,

  152. 152.

and a fully automatic washing machine

  153. 153.

are the three that come to mind.

  154. 154.

The initial cost is high, so it can make you hesitate,

  155. 155.

but in the long run, I think they're really worthwhile investments.

  156. 156.

Also, when cleaning, I don't aim for perfection.

  157. 157.

If it's about 80% clean, that's good enough!

  158. 158.

That's the mindset I live by every day.

  159. 159.

Even if you rely on helpful appliances or get your family to pitch in,

  160. 160.

there are still plenty of household chores you can't eliminate entirely.

  161. 161.

Cooking, tidying up the kitchen, wiping dust off shelves,

  162. 162.

    restocking the toilet paper,

  163. 163.

and if you include all the so-called invisible chores, the list is endless.

  164. 164.

    At times like that,

  165. 165.

I use my ears to turn chore time into entertainment time for myself.

  166. 166.

I listen to books on Audible or just listen to the audio from YouTube videos.

  167. 167.

My hands are doing chores, but my mind is enjoying something I like.

  168. 168.

It's what you might call “entertainment while you work.”

  169. 169.

That way, it doesn't feel like you spent 30 minutes doing nothing but chores.

  170. 170.

Instead, while doing chores for 30 minutes,

  171. 171.

you also got to enjoy 30 minutes of personal time.

  172. 172.

Our hands and eyes are always busy,

  173. 173.

but our ears are often free.

  174. 174.

    So grab your earphones, everyone,

  175. 175.

and turn chore time into time for yourself.

  176. 176.

When I say I “stopped doing housework,” you might imagine I have some amazing time-saving trick,

  177. 177.

or that I use the latest convenience appliances.

  178. 178.

You may have that kind of image in mind.

  179. 179.

But the main thing I did

  180. 180.

    wasn't making housework more efficient,

  181. 181.

but deciding what not to do.

  182. 182.

    Is this really necessary?

  183. 183.

Do I need to be the one who does it?

Does it need to be done today?

  185. 185.

Does it need to be done perfectly?

  186. 186.

If you question each task one by one like that,

  187. 187.

you may discover that there are surprisingly many chores you don't actually need to do.

  188. 188.

The harder you work at housework, the more endless it becomes,

  189. 189.

and it will continue for as long as we're alive.

  190. 190.

So rather than becoming someone who's good at housework,

  191. 191.

I chose systems that keep things running without me doing the chores,

  192. 192.

and ways to get them done with less effort.

  193. 193.

And with the time I free up, I do things I enjoy,

  194. 194.

    study, or take a nap—hey!

  195. 195.

I make sure to use that time in ways that genuinely fulfill me.

  196. 196.

Housework isn't the purpose of life; it's simply one of the tasks necessary for living.

  197. 197.

If any of you currently feel overwhelmed by daily housework,

  198. 198.

before asking yourself, “How can I do this more efficiently?”

  199. 199.

ask, “What would happen if I stopped doing this?”

  200. 200.

Try thinking about that for a moment.

  201. 201.

I think there are surprisingly many household chores you can stop doing without causing any problems.

  202. 202.

If there's a household chore you've decided, “I'm not doing this anymore!”
